The Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses of Indiana was formed in 1999 as a result of a grassroots movement by a variety of groups of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs). Indiana APNs felt the need to form a state level professional organization that would have as its primary focus the issues of APNs. CAPNI is dedicated to the understanding and advancement of the APN role at the local and state levels and to serve as a resource for individual APNs and others.
CAPNI is a professional group which has been organized to collaborate with and promote APNs at the local, state, and national levels.
Our objective is to provide the following opportunities for APNs:
Between APNs
Other health care professions
Increased public and professional awareness
Enhanced utilization
Develop, participate in, and sponsor educational activities for APNs
Initiate, facilitate, support and protect the APN profession
Currently there are 700+ members, which includes active professional and APN student members.
The Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses of Indiana engages in a variety of activities to further its goals. The organization monitors activities in the legislative and administrative branches of the government of the State of Indiana. CAPNI advocates for and represents positions of APNs in the state. This activity is to inform public policy makers of effects of policy decisions on the health of citizens of the state and also the ability of APNs to provide health care services. CAPNI makes available APN experts, drawn from its membership, to a variety of public and private entities for the purposes of education, testimony, and assistance in policy development. CAPNI, through its membership in related national organizations keeps both members and entities outside of the profession aware of national trends.
The organization also provides education for APNs.The purpose of these conferences is to provide an opportunity for APNs to remain current in the best clinical standards of practice, review and update on legal issues related to practice, as well as state, local and national practice issue updates. Through this activity APNs can fulfill state mandated continuing education requirements for prescriptive authority.
CAPNI also maintains a website, database, mail and email communication with members. Through these means of communication and networking our members are made aware of developments in the public and private sectors that may affect their professional practice.
